He borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh each from his two sisters to get the promised jewellery, but this amount too was lost.

In another incident, a 39-year-old woman committed suicide while her unemployed husband, who was addicted to online gaming, lost nearly Rs 20,000 to online rummy. That money is for his son’s school expenses.

These two were the first of many incidents that led the previous ADMK government in Tamil Nadu to completely ban online gambling. The decision was harsh and at best a knee-jerk reaction, but it showed a desperate need to regulate such sports. The Madras High Court later quashed the ban and asked them to come up with proper set of regulations instead of banning these games.
