This position statement is one of five platform documents developed in partnership with the early childhood industry. In its specific focus on promoting equity in preschool, this statement complements and supports other foundational documents that (1) describe developmentally appropriate practices, (2 ) sets professional standards and competencies for early childhood educators, (3) defines a professional code of ethics, and (4) outlines standards for early learning programs.

These fundamentals are based on our core values ​​that celebrate diversity and inclusion and respect the dignity and worth of each person. Statements that build on a growing body of research and professional knowledge highlight the complex and important ways that early childhood educators promote early learning through their relationships—with children, the family, and friends—embedded in a broader social context of inequality. where deception and revelation prevail.

Advancing equity in early childhood education requires an understanding of the broader social context, these constraints, and the ways in which past and present inequalities have shaped the institution, as they shape our country. The biases we are talking about here include race, class, culture, gender, sexuality, ability and disability, language, national origin nation, indigenous heritage, religion, and other identities. It has its origins in the social, political, economic and educational structures of our country. Because these risks are individual and controllable, attention must be paid to the human factors—the relationships and everyday interactions with which youth work is concerned. in public and private systems across the country, including early childhood education.

Specific recommendations for early childhood educators are also provided; administrators of schools, centers, family child care centers, and other educational settings for children; a facilitator of teacher preparation and professional development in higher education and other fields; and public policy makers. The recommendations are followed by a synthesis of current research on early childhood education from the perspectives of equity and core values; these discussions of evidence describe principles of child development and learning and how they are affected by socio-cultural contexts.
